The mezuzah the Jewish response to God's commandment to write his law on the doorposts of their houses. In Hebrew, the word mezuzah literally means "doorpost." For centuries, the commandments that God gave in the Hebrew texts of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and Deuteronomy 11:13-21 have been written on parchment (klaj) by a dedicated scribe, placed inside a small box (which can be made of virtually any material), and nailed to the doorpost. By placing a mezuzah on the right-hand doorpost at about eye level, the Jewish people constantly remind themselves to keep God's commandments and worship only him.
